things/matter

dearly beloved,
we are here today to lie to rest the things from your past.
we are here to cleanse you of the flotsam & jetsam that has built up over the course of your life. we are here to lighten your load.

let us start with the simple things first.
business cards, old bank receipts, coupons long ago expired, old x-mass cards.
drop them into the trash without a second thought.

now the boxes piled in the basement, attic, back hall, closet.
clear the remands of who you were in some past incarnation.
the old poster for your high school production of sound of music.
prom pictures & programs

year books & postcards
notes passed between friends whose last names you cant remember anymore.
your old blanket & teddy bear.
pictures from fourth of july 1986
old vacation souvenirs

now the clothing.
shirts long out of fashion
shoes that never were worn
that old suit
all the hats & neckties
every belt & bag
dress pants stained with wine
that tux
that wedding dress
those jeans you have had since college
the anniversary nightie
all your sox

clear the cabinets
dishes & silverware
unused wine glasses
the broken blender
your mothers cutting board
coffee mugs given by friends you never see anymore
the fine china
the turkey platter
every plastic spoon
the chopsticks left over from a take-out order.
all the canned food & boxes of pasta
spice racks seldom used
9 rolls of paper towels
candles & batteries
all the food you have.

the bathroom is next.
all the grooming products go.
every lotion & suave
the makeup & balms
towels, washcloths, scrub brushes
bath salts & after shave
all the medication.
cough & cold pills
aspirin
cures for heartburn & sleeplessness
the band-aids & cotton balls

now the walls
all the prints come down.
photos, drawings
a childs handprint in plaster
candle holders, plant hangers
& the bookshelves
dont forget the bookshelves
& the books
every one of then
the best sellers & old classics
the family bible & the romance novels
used textbooks, historical fiction
& the coffeetable books
& the coffeetable

now the larger items.
the sofa
the kitchen table
the stove & fridge
the lamps
the TV
the stereo
the carpets
the bed

keep at it until the house is empty
the walls & floor bare
now, look at yourself
remove your clothes
shirt & shoes
pants, underwear, sox
your wallet & jewelry
send it with all the rest

now, wait till sunset.
lay down in the middle of the dark emptiness
close your eyes
& think of all that you have left
every experience & adventure
all the high points
all the low points
think of the anger
the sadness
the joy
the love
the love
the love

remember all those dreams you had
all things you were going to be.
let yourself cry.

you were born naked & with nothing
& here you are again.

now is your chance to build the life you wanted.

amen.
